About Penny Mason
I work across several media processes including painting, drawing, printmaking and 3D collage. I have a continuing interest in parallels between the material processes that govern image evolution and the elements that shape environments. These themes are evident in my mobilisation of the alluvial qualities of watercolours to simultaneously evoke vast and miniscule spaces and details within to convey states of continuous emergence. These sometimes dramatic and sometimes imperceptible entities are intermingled to evoke the mysterious flux of space, time and matter.
I am particularly engrossed in the interplay of random elements and physical forces and exploit the characteristic instability of water and pigment (watercolour media) to generate aleatory or unplanned conjunctions. My practice is motivated by open-ended exploration.
